Check Engine Light Diagnosis

We find out why it’s on, explain it in plain terms and quote the repair before starting.

When the check engine light comes on, the vehicle’s computer has spotted a fault in the engine, emissions or a related system. It might be a loose gas cap or something as serious as a misfire.

The code only tells us where to start. Our technicians add live data and hands-on testing to find what’s actually wrong.

When to bring it in

  • The check engine light is on steadily
  • The light is flashing (have it checked right away)
  • Rough idle, hesitation or loss of power
  • Lower fuel economy than usual
  • A failed emissions test
  • Unusual smells or smoke from the exhaust
Check Engine Light Diagnosis

What’s included

  • Reading and interpreting stored trouble codes
  • Reviewing live sensor data
  • Testing the components related to the code
  • Checking for related technical service bulletins
  • A written explanation of findings and a repair estimate

What will it cost?

Cost depends on your vehicle and what the inspection turns up. You get the options and an estimate first, and nothing is done until you approve it.

How it works

What happens during your visit

  1. Scan

A professional scan tool reads the stored codes and the freeze-frame data saved with them.

  2. Test

We test the parts and systems the codes point to, so the repair targets the real cause.

  3. Explain

We tell you what’s wrong, how soon it needs fixing, and what the repair takes.

  4. Repair & confirm

Once you approve, we repair it, clear the codes and confirm the fix worked.

FAQ

Check Engine Light Diagnosis FAQs

Have another question? Call (253) 474-0511.

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?

Steady: book a check soon. Flashing: that often means a serious misfire that can ruin the catalytic converter, so drive as little as possible and bring it in right away.

Can a loose gas cap turn on the light?

Yes, it can set an evaporative emissions code. If tightening the cap doesn’t clear the light within a few drives, bring it in.

Why not just read the code and replace that part?

Codes point to the system that flagged a fault, not necessarily the failed part. Testing first keeps you from paying for parts you didn’t need.
